Disc Gives Fans A “Behind-The-Scenes” Look At The Most Recent X Games

LOS ANGELES – ESPN Enterprises, the division dedicated to extending the various ESPN brands into new businesses, in conjunction with ESPN Original Entertainment and Warner Strategic Marketing’s (WSM) new action sports imprint, Rhino Transport, will bring action sports fans the ultimate X Games release this November with INSIDE X: ESPN’S X GAMES IX. This exciting 73-minute film features all the highlights from X Games IX (2003) in Los Angeles, including the inaugural X Games surfing contest and the first-ever 360-degree spin on a motocross bike. X Games action sports showcased in the film consist of Skateboard, Moto X, Bike Stunt (BMX), Surfing, Aggressive In-line Skate, Wakeboard and Downhill BMX. A 16-track, 63-minute CD soundtrack of the film will also be included with each INSIDE X DVD as an added-value bonus.

This release marks an agreement between ESPN and Rhino Transport to produce action sports DVDs for fans of ESPN’s X Games properties. The agreement includes 12 titles, which will be released over a two-year period. INSIDE X: ESPN’s X GAMES IX is the first installment of the INSIDE X series on DVD. Six of the DVDs will fall under the INSIDE X series, which will feature highlights from ESPN’s signature X Games, Winter X Games and X Games Global Championship franchises. CD soundtracks of the DVDs will be included with each INSIDE X DVD as an extra added-value bonus.

The film will be supported by ESPN and Rhino Transport with print and TV advertising, in-store promotions, consumer contests, and radio and new media promotions. In addition, the DVD will be heavily promoted through all ESPN and Warner Music Group channels and at all X Games competitions.

While watching INSIDE X: ESPN’S X GAMES IX, fans will relive the X competitions featuring their favorite X Games athletes, including skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, fellow skateboarders Eric Koston and Shaun White, BMX tricksters Jamie Bestwick and Ryan Nyquist, and Moto X star Travis Pastrana. Hundreds of hours of footage were shot and paired with cutting-edge music from Jet, Pantera, Simple Plan, Ramones, Blue Man Group, MC5, O.A.R., Fu Manchu, Ministry and many more for this unique, action-packed program. Approximately 40 minutes of bonus features will appear on the DVD, including trick tips from athletes, best slams and crashes, a photo gallery, and X Games IX highlights.

“With interest in action sports having grown exponentially in the last few years, this is a new and exciting way for us to reach a crucial music-consuming audience,” said WSM President Scott Pascucci. “And Rhino Transport is uniquely positioned to offer the best videos and the best music to the core and mainstream fans. The X Games are the world’s greatest showcases for these extraordinary athletes, and working with ESPN, we’ll be able to give fans unprecedented access to them.”

Added Rick Alessandri, Senior Vice President and General Manager, ESPN Enterprises, “These DVDs will bring home the excitement of our tremendously popular X Games directly to fans in a totally new way. Fans will really be able to get into the experience and lifestyle of these athletes and the events themselves.”

X Games IX (2003) on ESPN drew 55 million viewers. This translates into viewership reaching one out of every four teenagers. Rhino Transport launched earlier this year with the DVD release Flipped Out, The Story Behind The Ultimate Freestyle Motorcross Maneuver, featuring Mike Metzger, Carey Hart and Caleb Wyatt. Ten to 12 titles will be released in 2004, including Spike Jonze’s skateboard film Yeah Right and the sequel to the motocross classic Freeride Revolution.

ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Action Sports, first developed its X Games franchise in 1995. As part of the ESPN Original Entertainment division, X Games, Winter X Games, EXPN 2Day and X Games Global Championship are just some of the original action sports programming currently shown on ESPN and ESPN2. The brand has also grown to include international X Games events,, EXPN Radio, the large-format film ESPN’s Ultimate X, X Games skateparks and various X Games-branded retail products.
