Cool School, The

New York, NY (July 10, 2008)—This month, Arts Alliance America and Arthouse Films will be releasing an intriguing documentary that features the evolving art movement in Los Angeles during the 50’s and 60’s. Narrated by actor Jeff Bridges, The Cool School focuses on the seminal Ferus Art Gallery, which groomed the L.A. art scene from a loose band of beatniks into a coterie of competitive and brilliant artists. The Ferus also served as a launching point for New York imports and was the first gallery where pop icon Andy Warhol hosted his first Soup Can show. Artists featured in the documentary include: Ed Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Craig Kauffman, Wallace Berman, Ed Moses, Andy Warhol and Robert Irwin. The DVD will be released on July 29, 2008 for a suggested retail price of $29.95. Bonus features on the DVD include: Walter Hopps discussing “Walter Hopps, Hopps, Hopps” by Ed Kienholz, The World of Ed Kienholz, and the Ferus Artist Reunion.

Between 1957 and 1966, The Ferus Gallery nurtured Los Angeles’ first significant post-war artists. Operating out of a small storefront, the gallery hosted debut exhibitions and served as a general launching point for Ed Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Craig Kauffman, Wallace Berman, Ed Moses and Robert Irwin, among many others. By the time it closed in 1966, the gallery had also played a role in solidifying the careers of many of New York’s brightest talents, including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. While Ferus had a polarizing effect on artists, ideas and art, the gallery managed to do for art in Los Angeles what museums previously could not. Even though their ideas were disparate, abstract expressionism and Pop, Ferus artists shared ideas, goals, workspaces and a lasting vision. “The Cool School” presents how Los Angeles art came of age.
